This 30 day course is ideally suited for those who want to work overseas in the yachting industry, especially for those who want to work on Super Yachts. Prospective students will achieve the minimum certification and qualifications needed to find work as crew.

Course Description: This course is designed for those who have a minimal knowledge of sailing. The course is anchored by the Super Yachting South Africa (SYSA) Yacht Deck Hand course. Instruction in Maintenance Techniques, Anchoring Procedures and Docking are practiced in detail. The course lasts 3 days and takes place on various luxury yachts here at the V & A. Students begin their practical training at the Competent Crew level, where they learn basic seamanship such as rope-work, sail handling, keeping a good lookout and assisting with all the day to day handling of yacht. After a week on the water (5 days and 4 nights) students move to the classroom where they spend another week (5 days) learning the basic theory involved in boating (power and sail), with an emphasis on safety, rules of the road and fundamental navigational methods. Theory is then put into practice as students head back to the boat for the Day Skipper Practical course and another 5 days of sailing. This is followed by the STCW (Standards of Training for Crew and Watch) 95 course, where students learn basic first aid, firefighting and life-raft training. In the final week students will participate in an exciting 2 day Power Boat course on one of our 400hp Ballistic Rigid Infaltable Boats RIB’S). This Power Boat Level 1&2 course is now a prerequisite for most crew if they want to handle the yacht’s tender. A further 2 days are spent in Table Bay learning the ropes on our traditional Gaff-Rig Schooner, Spirit of Victoria. Students will then spend a last day in the classroom earning their RYA VHF license.

Accomodation: Students stay on the boat during the practical courses in order to get a real feel for onboard living. A stipend for essentials (tea, coffee, cereal, ilk, etc) is included in the course price. During the theory week and STCW 95, students need to find accommodation locally (where possible we arrange for affordable quarters on one of our boats). We are more than happy to provide the contact details for a number of local hostelries which are safe and affordable.

What to Bring: We ask that students bring a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, a change of clothes, and suitable wet weather gear. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a good idea. For the theory course students will need 2B pencils, a notebook and where possible, their own portland plotter and dividers. We can help with the purchase of any of these materials.

Summary and Certification: RYA (unless stated) Competent Crew, Day Skipper Theory, Day Skipper Practical, STCW 95, Power Boat Level 1 & 2, SYSA Deck Hand, VHF/SRC, OSSA Schooner, OSSA T-Shirt and Hat.

Duration: 30 Days

Additional Extras: Accommodation during non-practical courses (approximately 15 days should there not be space available on one of our boats), food during theory courses and STCW 95. You may want to budget for additional food and entertainment.

(*South African students may be eligible for our work placement program at the Waterfront Boat Companny upon course completion)
