Our 25 day entry level Gap Year course is ideally suited for young people who want to travel and work overseas in the yachting industry. This budget conscious course offers students certification and qualifications suitable for finding work as crew. The course is also designed for those who have a minimal knowledge of sailing.

Course Description: Students begin at the Competent Crew level, where they learn basic seamanship such as rope-work, sail handling, keeping a good lookout and assisting with all the day to day handling of a yacht.

After a week on the water students move to the classroom where they spend another week learning the basic theory involved in sailing, with an emphasis on safety, rules of the road and fundamental navigational practices.

Theory is then put into practice as students head back to the boat for the Day Skipper Practical course and another 5 days of sailing.

This is followed by the STCW (Standards of Training for Crew and Watch) 95 course, where students learn basic first aid, firefighting and life-raft training. The course is rounded out with a one day RYA VHF/SRC course.

Accomodation: Students stay on the boat during the practical courses in order to get a real feel for onboard living. A subsidy for essentials (coffee, tea, cereal etc.) is included in the price to encourage students to cook and eat on board. During the theory week and STCW 95, students need to find accommodation locally. We are more than happy to provide the contact details for a number of local hostelries which are safe and affordable.

What to Bring: We ask that students bring a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, a change of clothes, and suitable wet weather gear. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also a good idea. For the theory course students will need 2B pencils, a notebook and where possible, their own portland plotter and dividers. We can help with the purchase of any of these materials.

Summary and Certification: RYA (unless stated) Competent Crew, Day Skipper Theory, Day Skipper Practical, STCW 95, VHF/SRC and OSSA Cap.

Additional Extras: Accomodation during non-practical courses (approximately 12 days).
